A 360 drone earns its money in one way, and 8K is not it

Buy one if you film things that will not wait: a rider coming through a gap, a boat turning, a dog that has already gone past you, anything where you get one attempt and no second take. Buy one if the phrase "reframe in post" describes an evening you enjoy rather than a chore you resent. Walk away if you want the sharpest picture at this price, if you want long flights, if you want to send the aircraft a long way from where you stand, or if you were hoping the word Avata meant you were buying something to fly rather than something to edit.
Everything else on this page is the arithmetic behind that stance, because almost every argument about 360 drones is really an argument about one number and almost nobody does the sum. The number is honest. It is measured around the whole sphere, and a sphere is not a shot.
Where the 8K actually goes
A 360 drone records everything around itself at once. On the DJI Avata 360, that full wrap is 7,680 pixels wide, which is where the 8K badge comes from, and the claim is true in the only sense the marketing department needs it to be. The trouble starts the moment you sit down to edit, because nobody publishes a sphere. You choose a direction, choose a field of view, and export a rectangle. That rectangle is a slice of the 7,680, and the pixels outside it are gone.

That middle row is the one to remember. A framing that looks like a drone shot rather than a science experiment eats about a third of the sphere, and a third of 7,680 lands under 4K by a clear margin. People who have flown the thing describe the same experience without the sums: reframe with any conviction and the file behaves like 2.7K footage. The working rule that falls out of this is counterintuitive and worth tattooing somewhere: the wider you leave the final shot, the better it looks, because you are keeping more of what was captured.
There is one place the number pays out properly, and it is stills. The spherical photo comes off the Avata 360 at 15,520 by 7,760, which leaves enough headroom to crop hard into a still that genuinely holds up at 4K. So what are you actually paying for
The pitch that survives contact with reality is not resolution, it is insurance. You point the aircraft near the subject and you have already filmed it from every angle, and the decision about where the camera was looking gets made afterwards, on the sofa, with the shot safely on a card. No gimballed drone can offer that. It can only ever be pointing one way, and if it was pointing the wrong way, you did not get the shot.
That is a real product, and for the right person it is worth more than pixel counts. The honest counterweight is that some of the spectacular 360 footage circulating is reframing rather than flying. Spin the virtual camera hard enough over straight-and-level flight and it looks like a roll. If that impresses you, fine, it is a legitimate technique. If it disappoints you, that feeling is the single most reliable signal that this format is not for you.
The tolls, in the order you will meet them
Every clip has to pass through DJI Studio before it becomes footage. It lands in DJI's own .osv container, and you reframe it, level the horizon and set the field of view there before an ordinary editor will open it. Once you know the shot you want, it is quick; the trap is that a 360 file contains every possible shot, and choosing takes longer than filming did. At roughly 455 g it is nowhere near the 249 g line, so registration and Remote ID apply even for recreational flying, and it is audible from around five hundred metres, which quietly rules out the park and the quiet street.
One more, because it will ruin a take before you understand what happened. Close to an object, or on a sharp change of speed or direction, the seam between the two lenses can walk across the frame. Bank a turn and slow gradually rather than stopping hard, and it mostly stays out of your shot.
None of that is fatal, and the ducted airframe buys some of it back: during tracking tests the Avata 360 clipped a small branch the sensing missed, wobbled and carried on, where a folding drone would have gone down. Do not read that as permission to trust the sensors. If what you want is the flying, this is the wrong shape of drone
The Avata badge is the most misleading thing about the 360, and it catches people who should know better. There is no true manual mode, only an assisted acro where the aircraft performs the flips for you. If throwing a quad around is the point, the Avata 2 is the aircraft, and it is still the gentlest way anyone has built into FPV: goggles, a motion wand, and a pause button that airbrakes into a hover hard enough to rescue a beginner who has run out of nerve.
It has its own gap between box and reality, and the same shape of gap. Twenty-three minutes is measured at a constant 21.6 kph, windless, at sea level, at 1080p with video mode off, run to a flat battery. Owners report about fifteen minutes of real flying, which is precisely why the three-battery kit is the minimum viable version and the single-battery kit is a trap. It has no forward obstacle avoidance at all, on a drone designed to be flown close to solid objects, and it is not as tough as the integrated guards imply: a pilot with more than a decade of FPV behind him cracked a guard in his first week from a fall of a metre or two. These two drones share a name and almost nothing else, which is why we treat them as a comparison rather than an upgrade path. The cleanest published statement of the fork puts it better than a spec sheet can: take the Avata 2 for a simpler workflow and footage you can use immediately, take the 360 if you enjoy editing and want maximum creative control. The case for buying neither
Most people asking this question should buy a conventional camera drone, and it is worth saying plainly rather than burying it under nuance. If your shots are establishing shots, landscapes, property, anything you frame deliberately and anything a client will look at closely, a DJI Air 3S or a Mavic 4 Pro will make that image look better with a fraction of the post-production, and will stay in the air longer while doing it. The camera drone shortlist is where that money goes.
